The Ellis Stones Memorial Award for Research in Landscape Architecture

This award commemorates the late Ellis Stones, an eminent and respected Australian landscape architect.

There are two Ellis Stones Memorial Awards given each year for excellence in research in the field of landscape architecture.  The first award is for $4,000 (or such sum as the Council may determine) and a bronze plaque. The second award is for $2,000 (or such sum as the Council may determine) and a bronze plaque.

The awards are made by the Council on the recommendation of a committee comprising the Head of Landscape Architecture (or nominee) who is chairperson and four other members recommended by the chairperson and appointed annually by the Council. The awards are open for competition annually to students enrolled in a higher degree by research in the field of landscape architecture or relevant to the practice or study of landscape architecture.

The committee evaluates:

  1. the research submitted for the awards, which should include a peer-reviewed publication such as an article published in a refereed journal, a refereed conference paper, a chapter in a scholarly book and the like; and
  2. an oral presentation by finalist candidates of their research as addressed in the submitted material.

The committee will decide which publications are deemed to report on research in landscape architecture.

With regard to the quality of the research submitted, the committee may in any year recommend that only one of the awards, or no award, be made.

All postgraduate research students who have produced a publication that reports on research in the field of landscape architecture, or that is directly related to the practice and/or study of landscape architecture and that was published between 31 October 2007 and 31 October 2008, are urged to submit material for consideration.  Submit publications for consideration to Lorenne Wilks (Research Manager) via the Student Centre, located on the Ground Floor of the Old Commerce Building, by Monday, 20 July 2009.

Proof that publications are in acceptable research publications will need to be included with submissions. Therefore, applicants are required to complete the checklist obtainable from the ABP Research Office (or download from the ABP website) and attach this form to their submissions.

Finalists will be contacted in late July 2009 and asked to give a 10 minute presentation to the judging committee during the second week of August. Winners will be notified soon after and prizes will be awarded at the Ellis Stones Awards night in October 2009.
