Translations between Multiple Design Representations

The research aims to investigate and support simultaneous use of multiple representations of spatial data including maps, diagrams and charts in three dimensional design tasks. The project is motivated by the view that multiple and simultaneous representations enable qualitatively different and comprehensive design inferences and insights. By drawing upon existing design literature, the research project first proposes taxonomy of representations based on graphic elements and inferences they support. These ideas are then tested and evaluated through a computer prototype system called REX (Representation Exchange) that supports multiple representations and seamless transfer of information and updates among representations.
