Digital virtual environments comprise representations of three dimensional space, events, artifacts, characters and user interaction. This research investigates such concepts from both theoretical and technical aspects in order to develop experientially rich and engaging digital environments. The research project draws upon ideas and literature originating in spatial design disciplines to develop digital narratives that reflect social, cultural and historical information about a place. The research objectives are developed in collaboration with our industry partner who is one of the major travel-related information publishers. The ideas developed in the project are tested and evaluated through a prototype virtual environment for Palenque, Mexico, a major Mayan cultural site with rich and complex geographical environment and history.
