The Graduate Fellowship Scheme

The Graduate Fellowship Scheme is an initiative aimed at providing PhD candidates in the Melbourne School of Design opportunities for training and experience in teaching. Under the scheme, successful applicants are assigned teaching positions, receive training, and attend two dedicated workshops to reflect on their experiences. Academic staff proposing teaching positions should be aware that awarded tutoring hours will be drawn from OTAA funds. However, the placements provide fund allocation for an additional 18 hours per semester for assistance with subject preparation, marking and other relevant duties, paid by the Graduate Fellowship scheme.  This scheme therefore benefits PhD candidates and provides some additional support for subject coordinators. Ultimately, it will also create a valuable resource of trained teaching assistants within the Faculty.

The scheme is being inaugurated in Semester Two, 2009. Ten positions have been offered as a pilot.

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP (Teaching Assistant) APPLICATIONS FOR PHD CANDIDATES:

Application due dates and positions will be advertised prior to each semester. PhD candidates will be invited to submit their applications for a fellowship position, listing their top three preferences, using the form provided.

Applications are now closed for Semester Two, 2009.

Candidate eligibility

Please note that only candidates who have passed their confirmation successfully will be considered eligible for the scheme, and fellowships are limited to a maximum of two semesters. Application must be made for each semester.

As a key aim of the scheme is to promote a broader inclusion of graduate students in the Faculty’s core teaching, and to avoid potential conflicts of interest, a PhD candidate will NOT be able to enter into a Graduate Fellowship position with their own supervisor or co-supervisor(s) as the nominating Academic staff member.

All applications by PhD candidates will require their supervisors' endorsement.

Awarding of Fellowships

Applications will be assessed by a subcommittee in consultation with the nominating academic staff member. The applicant’s supervisor may be consulted if thought necessary.

The criteria for awards shall include, but not necessarily be limited to:
