Research and Innovation
ABP is the leading school for research into the built environment in Australia.
The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning Graduate School is situated at the nexus between research, teaching excellence and industry relevance in the built environment. It produces research which redefines and contributes to discourse locally and internationally and provides opportunities for advanced studies in all aspects of the area. We are uniquely interdisciplinary rather than program-based, encompassing researchers working across every field of built environment studies.
Leading Research
ABP's research strengths are organized into four leading interdisciplinary groups bringing together staff and students to exchange knowledge and engage in debates on key topics in similar areas of research interest.
Our research groups are:
- Asia-Pacific Modernities: History and Social Critique
- Design, Technologies and Practice
- Housing, Transport and Communities
- Sustainable Built Environments
ABP researchers have enjoyed considerable success in winning external funding to support their work. Current Faculty projects are supported by grants from the Australian Research Council and from government, cultural, industry and community organisations.
Centres of Research
ABP is host to a number of leading built environment research centres and large projects:
- Australasian Centre for the Governance and Management of Urban Transport (GAMUT)
- UNESCO Observatory for Multidisciplinary Research in the Arts
- Transnational and Temporary: Place making, students and community in Central Melbourne
- Critical Research in Digital Architecture (CRIDA)
- Gender, Local Governance, and Violence Prevention: Making the Links between Violence in Private and Public Space (The GLOVE Project)
