Exploring the possibilities for Atherton Gardens in Fitzroy has demonstrated that urban quality can be enhanced despite an increase in density. This urban strategy has seen the refurbishment of two of the four social housing towers, while the two adjacent to Brunswick Street have been converted into a public realm, in the form of a plaza, to maximize the street interface thereby encouraging activity into the site. A network of pedestrian streets across the site promotes a reduction in traffic, noise and pollution, whereby foot and bicycle traffic reinforce the concept of the pedestrian as the focus of development. |

The pivotal element that links the activity through the site is the plaza, which stimulates people into new social habits and provides new paths to and from Brunswick Street, creating new places to pause, promoting social interaction and public activity.
