Master of Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture is the design profession responsible for the creation of enjoyable and environmentally sustainable outdoor places. Landscape architects design, plan and manage natural and urban environments, from small, intimate outdoor spaces to entire biogeographical regions.
The program's teaching in design and practice is underpinned by equal strengths in theory and technology with a focus on sustainability. You may also take a research subject which may enable you to progress to further studies as a PhD candidate.
In 2008, the University of Melbourne launches its new program in landscape architecture as one of a suite of professionally accredited and post-professional coursework masters programs in the Melbourne School of Design. The program structure is designed both to expand on existing qualifications in the field (1-2 years) and to provide opportunities for an internationally recognized professional qualification for those from other fields (2-3 years). It builds on the strengths of the previous program to provide advanced subject content in:
- designing and planning (historic landscapes, landscape planning, sustainable landscapes and an opportunity for individual investigative specialization);
- the techniques of delivery (including ecological and technological sustainability);
- practice (international, commercial/private, public/community and interdisciplinary); and
- natural systems – especially the emerging role of functioning ecosystems within habitable areas.
These areas of study are underpinned by specialist subjects and seminars led by highly qualified staff actively involved in cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural research in these areas, who contribute to cutting-edge theory and practice in landscape architecture in all its guises – from the contemporary to the historic, the global to local, the urban and suburban to wilderness. These subjects are supplemented by electives from allied disciplines including urban design, urban planning, architecture, property and construction, as well as subjects designed to explore cross-disciplinary and international practice.
The program is designed to provide opportunities for students to access and immerse them in new ways of thinking about and conceptualizing landscape architecture as a discipline. Through this process and in line with the University of Melbourne’s goals, they are educated to be the professional leaders of the future, prepared on graduation, to confront the significant environmental and cultural challenges wherever they are called upon. All programs are accredited by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
