Project Description
Stage 1: Examines how the twin challenges of oil depletion and global climate change will impact on dispersed cities in both the short and long term, and the ability of alternative fuels and power systems to address these problems. Moriarty is examining the ecological sustainability potential of biomass fuels, hydrogen, hybrid vehicles including plug-in hybrids within the time frames imposed by global oil depletion and climate change. In addition, the potential of drastic energy efficiency improvements in vehicles - both private and public - is being investigated.
Stage 2: A detailed data base on Melbourne travel statistics from 1950 to 2006 is under development, with less detailed statistics for 1900-1950 Melbourne and for other Australian capital cities. The results of the 2006 Australian census are starting to appear, but no transport data on the journey to work is available yet. In later years, the work may be extended to include Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore depending on data availability.
