1E. Exploring Practical Options for Reducing Greenhouse Emissions from Urban Transport in Australian Cities.

Project Description

The aim of this project is to research and propose a range of practical policy options for the stabilization and then reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transport in metropolitan Melbourne. The project will use the portfolio approach adopted by Pacala and Socolow at Princeton University. The specific aims of the project are: 1) to describe and assess the variables forming the context for climate change mitigation strategy in urban transport, 2) to assess the feasible elements of a stabilization portfolio in the urban transport and land use domain, specifically focusing on active and collective transport, and pinpoint the likely overall impact on emission levels from a range of feasible changes in travel behaviour and urban form, 3) to investigate the problems of implementing such a portfolio strategy which would necessarily traverse government levels and bureaucratic domains, and 4) make recommendations for policy and organizational change to enable the strategy to be realized. Additional funding sources are being sought for the project.
