Project Description
This project is a joint effort between two VREF CoEs, namely, the Australian Centre for Governance and Management of Urban Transport (GAMUT) and China Urban Sustainable Transport Research Centre (CUSTRC). Its primary objective is to address a gap in sustainable urban transport planning by providing a systematic review and analysis of the concept of Transit-Oriented-Development (TOD) and its application in China. A case study approach is used to illustrate the TOD concept and its applications. These include four international examples that demonstrate the TOD concept, and six Chinese examples that show TOD practice in China.
A book will be produced in the Chinese language - "TOD (Transit -Oriented-Development - the concept of TOD and its application in China)". Six chapters are presented in the book. Chapter 1 introduces the TOD concept and the context of its development. Chapter 2 presents four international cases from which major TOD characteristics can be observed. Chapter 3 discusses the need for TOD in China's urban development, from the perspectives of demands for urban commuting, better environment, economic growth, land supply, and services associated with a new demographic structure. Chapter 4 analyses six case study cities where the TOD concept is in use. Analyses here focus on the issues in implementing TOD, and the impact of TOD on urban spatial structure as well as the development of projects along the transit lines. Chapter 5 examines the barriers against TOD implementation, focusing on both institutional and other factors. Chapter 6 outlines some policy suggestions towards an effective use of TOD in China. This book is a basic reading for Chinese urban and transportation planners, managers, and researchers. It can be also used as a textbook for students in the area of urban and transportation studies.
