Low Carbon Transport for our Cities

Symposium held on November 10th - 13th 2008

Day One - Overview

What does 'low carbon' urban transport mean? What policies are needed, and what issues arise from the objective of an urban transport system with greatly reduced climate impact?

Day Two - Slow Transport

What is necessary to provide for the shorter journeys people can make by active or small motor transport: journeys on foot or pedal bike, electric and other smalled powered bikes? Walking and cycling needs are not the same! What infrastructure do people need, and what will help them adopt 'slow transport' modes?

Day Three - Public Transport

What roles can advanced, integrated public transport systems play in reducing carbon emissions? What is 'best practice' public transport management and how can it be implemented in Australian cities? What role can land use change (transit oriented development) play in supporting public transport use to reduce carbon emissions?

Day Four - Behaviour Change

Whose behaviour needs to change and what sort of change is needed? Will low carbon transport require a change of lifestyle, and will the quality of life be better or worse? Are transport cultures unchangeable? Are institutional structures and dependencies blocking the change? What might unblock mindsets shaped by a car-borne future?
