PHD research Topic
Public Transport for Dispersed Urban SettlementsThe difficulty of providing high-quality public transport to low density areas has long troubled planners. Paul Mees (2000) argued that in suburban environments like those of Toronto and Melbourne, a well-planned network of frequent services could create a 'network effect' that made more public transport trips feasible.
However, this service model probably cannot be justified for settlements in rural or ex-urban areas, where population densities are lower and distances are longer. This thesis will therefore seek to identify a model of high-occupancy, economically viable public transport for dispersed urban settlements.
