Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning

Postgraduate Coursework Student Profile

Jing Bo Jin

What are you studying in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?

I am a master student of Urban Design. It is an attractive course, including architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture. Furthermore, it can expand my understanding of architecture (I major in architecture in China).

What did you study before commencing your studies at the University of Melbourne, and at which institution?

I got a 5-year bachelor of architecture in Shanghai University, China. When I finished my bachelor, I worked in Hua Dong Architecture Institution, Shanghai, China.

What interested you in coming to the University of Melbourne? What attracted you to the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?

The University of Melbourne is a distinguished university in China. Before I decided to come here, I have heard a lot from my professors. And as I know, the library here is absolutely wonderful. There are lots of intelligent, knowledgeable professors, patient and warmhearted staff in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.

How are you finding your experience at the University so far? What are the highlights?

The course here is well designed. And the professors I meet are all erudite and patient. Actually, I had little experience in the relevant area before I began my study here. Thus when I am studying in Urban Design, I always find it a little bit hard, including fluent expression. But my coordinator, as well as other professors, always guide me and help me. Now I think I have adapted to the new environment here.

Furthermore, the education here is international. I can attend many lectures. My classmates are also international. We can learn from each other.

What are you planning to do when you have completed your studies at Melbourne?

I hope I can find a relevant job here. Then I will go back to China after I get some work experience here. Because China is developing so fast, but it also lack well educated urban designers. I hope I can learn good western design approach and methods, and then bring back to my hometown.
