Postgraduate Coursework Student Profile
Yifang Huang
What are you studying in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?
Currently, I am studying towards finishing a Master of Architecture. I have done most of the subjects in both coursework and research. Thus I am turning back into some Architectural Practice studies, along with a design studio.
What did you study before commencing your studies at the University of Melbourne , and at which institution?
I studied Architecture in Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou, China and achieved my Bachelor Degree.
What interested you in coming to the University of Melbourne? What attracted you to the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?
My design interests are in Urban/ Social Housing; Public Spaces and Institutions; the engagement between Sustainable Architecture and Urban Design. Considering the professional outcome in both practical and research fields, University of Melbourne became my first choice.
Much more, I was drawn to all the resources that the faculty offered. The latest library and Internet information system, plenty of lecture and seminar opportunities, the best professors and high-qualified PhDs, all provided a multi-dimensional backup for tertiary education.
How are you finding your experience at the University so far? What are the highlights?
The postgraduate level study helps me to develop further and reflective thinking; it is no doubt that it will improve my design and some other skills in substantial fields. The most cheerful experience for me is to have a chance to combine study and practice at the same time, in particular finding the balance between fun and pain in Architecture.
What are you planning to do when you have completed your studies at Melbourne?
Hopefully I would be able to keep working in Melbourne and achieve more practical experience, taking good advantage of my cross-cultural background. I would also like to work internationally and develop further research thought later.
What advice do you have for other students thinking of studying in the Faculty?
Have good time management plus a well-organized system, and then we can do more than we expect. It is also fantastic to get to know some intimate friends here.
