Postgraduate Coursework Student Profile
Craig Chester
What are you studying in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?
I am studying the Master of Architecture by Coursework. Currently I am enrolled in Sustainable Buildings and Studies in Contemporary Architecture.
What did you study before commencing your studies at the University of Melbourne, and at which institution?
I completed a Bachelor of Architecture with distinction at RMIT in 1985. I am the Principal of an Architectural Practice with offices in Melbourne and Sydney.
What interested you in coming to the University of Melbourne ? What attracted you to the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?
I was interested in the structured study required for the postgraduate degree by coursework. I was attracted by the relevance and diversity of the subjects offered, and the professional manner in which they were presented to me. The opportunity to re-invent myself in Architectural Practice and find new ways to challenge my thinking really appealed.
How are you finding your experience at the University so far? What are the highlights?
The staff have been very friendly and helpful. I think the experience of returning to study after a long absence can be daunting; however I have been made to feel very welcome. I am looking forward to learning new technologies, gaining new perspectives and interacting with dynamic younger students in a studio environment. Perhaps I can also offer something from my experience.
What are you planning to do when you have completed your studies at Melbourne ?
I hope to have developed new areas of specialization. I want to continue in private Architectural Practice with new perspectives gained from a return to study.
What advice do you have for other students thinking of studying in the Faculty?
I would encourage more practicing architects to undertake further education in the Faculty. There are enormous benefits studying in conjunction with practice. I think the opportunity to interact with future generations of the profession is invaluable.
