Postgraduate Coursework Student Profile
Frank Blackwell
What are you studying in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?
I am studying a Masters in Property and Construction by coursework. I have completed Facility Management and am currently enrolled in Property Development and a 50 point Research Project. Next semester I plan to enroll in Managing Change and Property Investment. On the assumption I pass all subjects, I will have achieved my Masters Degree by the end of 2004. Each of the subjects provides 2 hours of lecture per week plus a 1hour tutorial. In addition there are two or three assignments to be completed.
What did you study before commencing your studies at the University of Melbourne, and at which institution?
Prior to enrolling at the University of Melbourne, I had completed a Graduate Diploma in Property at RMIT University in 1994 during my time there as Senior Lecturer in Valuation.
What interested you in coming to the University of Melbourne? What attracted you to the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning?
Although I have reached an age where most people are retired or thinking of retiring, I decided I wanted to complete some further studies just for my own personal satisfaction. I also wanted a change in educational culture and the University of Melbourne has provided that.
The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning provides the subject content I want.
How are you finding your experience at the University so far? What are the highlights?
Ready acceptance by both staff and the student body at my age has enabled me to swiftly integrate back into university life. I find the professionalism and helpfulness of the staff with whom I have come into contact to be of great support.
What are you planning to do when you have completed your studies at Melbourne?
On the assumption of success at Masters level, I am seriously considering further studies at Doctoral level. I will have reduced my professional workload by then and will be able to give sufficient time and energy to further research.
What advice do you have for other students thinking of studying in the Faculty?
Make the most of the opportunities provided both inside and outside the classroom. Don't just think about it - go for it!
