Virginia Travelling Studio

This travelling studio has as it’s canvas the famous University of Viginia campus by Thomas Jefferson. Using this backdrop, students will propose interventions to accomodate student learning outside formal teaching formats and timetables. Spaces for informal learning are increasingly finding currency in design briefs as the focus of educational settings are changing from teaching institutions to learning organisations. Concurrently research into pedagogy is impacting on curriculum and delivery bringing with it new understandings of learning styles, multiple and tacit intelligences and formative assessments. Third Space, a termed coined by Oldenberg (and appropriated by Starbucks) will be explored in this studio for its potential to support creative interactions. Learning and the landscape, found space, interstitial, hybrid and parasitic notions will be explored for potential contributions to designing for Learning in the 21st century.

The first 6 weeks were based in Melbourne, week 7 will was spent attending CEFPI* 2009 World Conference and Forum in Washington, weeks 8 and 9 the studio attended the U21** Educational Design Workshop at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Virginia, Charlotsville. The final 3 weeks of semester were spent consolidating and presenting work in Melbourne.
