It is an interesting coincidence that as the global futures market slips into less liquid terrain, Melbourne faces its longest recorded drought. While no-one would argue that the global financial crisis has been sparked by climate change, few doubt that as icecaps melt, worldwide weather patterns will change dramatically leading to serious economic consequences as disaster relief is rolled out, food production is compromised and habitats change. Our LIQUID FUTURES, both economic and material, are global uncertainties. How do our cities need to change to cope with such unpredictability? And how will the cultural and social dimension of such change become manifest in the designs for our future? This book and exhibition is a collection of architectural and urban design propositions focussed on Melbourne that respond to such questions.
