Artist's Statement
These books were once intended as note-books. They were made in India from discarded printed matter, and to make the pages, the blank side of the discard has been folded out thus hiding the original printed surface. Against this, I have revealed parts of the original imagery through cuts and tears, new fold-overs and holes. The note-book's original intrigue of what has been hidden has been replaced with a game of guessing what has been cut or torn, and how it has been folded.
The original format of sections divided by brown paper suggested a number of parts. Once the idea of "cut" and "tear" was established, each book was improvised as a sequence. Both books were made over a single day to keep the flow going.
