Professor Tom KvanThe Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning is a lively community of staff and students whose interest and expertise focuses on the built environment. We established one of the first bachelor degrees in architecture in 1927 and now educate the full range of built environment professionals. We have a deep and lively culture of exploration and experimentation manifested in many forms, from classroom and studio to research enquiry, invigorated by regular lectures and exhibitions complemented with forums for debate.  Our cultural diversity is our strength; students and staff have come to Melbourne from over 50 countries. We have a strong alumni body who hold many significant roles across Australia and the world.


The faculty offers undergraduate, graduate coursework and research programs in the built environment. We have played a major role in the development and delivery of the Bachelor of Environments degree, one of the six university undergraduate degrees at Melbourne. Studies in this degree introduce you to the knowledge to create and manage the world in which we live. There are eleven majors in the degree; the Faculty leads delivery in the majors of architecture, landscape architecture, property, construction and urban design and planning. Through these, you are equipped to support leaders in their fields in developing, governing and realising the future world or you can proceed to graduate education in your chosen field by progressing to the Melbourne School of Design.


The Melbourne School of Design has provided provide professional entry programs, professional development options and research degrees. The Melbourne School of Design is positioned at the nexus between research, teaching excellence and industry relevance by providing programs which lead to professional qualification and skill enhancement in the built environment fields. In our framework of multidisciplinary design enquiry, students in the MSD acquire the knowledge and skills to join the best in their chosen professions. While studying for your professional qualification, you will be meet and establishing strong valuable connections with future leaders in related professions. You will leave the University of Melbourne ready to take significant responsibility and with the capacity to take up positions of leadership.


We are the country’s leading research centre across the built environment and have consistently secured the majority of funded research grants over the years. Research is an integral part of the Faculty and is well supported by government and industry research funding, and by excellent equipment and facilities. We offer a range of work and study spaces over three buildings for students and graduate researchers, from shared offices to design studios and communal workspaces such as computer laboratories. The Faculty's library is recognised as housing the best collection of texts on the built environment in Australia.
