Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning

About Us

The University of Melbourne introduced Australia's first studies in architecture in the 1860s. ABP established the first full-time architecture course in 1927. Since then, courses in other disciplines of the built and natural environment have followed and we now train architects, construction managers, quantity surveyors, property professionals, landscape architects, urban planners, urban designers, and workplace planners and designers. As the Faculty has grown it has embraced new modes of delivery, course innovation and outlook. As one of the largest and best resourced schools of built environment and design in Australia, we have an enviable teaching and research record.

Under the leadership of our Dean, Professor Tom Kvan, the Faculty will see the implementation of the Melbourne Model initiatives including the introduction of the Bachelor of Environments. The Faculty's undergraduate teaching will be concentrated in this new degree. The Faculty will introduce the Melbourne School of Design in 2008. This is the next step in the evolution of teaching in the built environments disciplines at the University and will encompass professional entry graduate programs, professional development programs as well as graduate research degrees.

Our academic staff are highly qualified, bringing a vast amount of expertise and research knowledge to the classroom. Research undertaken in the Faculty filters down to all our taught programs and provides students with current learning on important developments and innovations within their respective fields. The Faculty has an impressive list of honorary staff who are industry and research professionals providing a depth of engagement. The Faculty is also home to major research centres and projects engaging research experts in the built environments. Professional staff support the Faculty by providing high-quality course advice, transition services and support for our students and their families.

The Faculty regularly holds events and public lectures and exhibitions which are open to the staff, students and the general public. The Research Seminar Series and the Dean's Lecture Series are just some of the events which occur throughout the year. The Faculty also houses the Architecture Library which is widely recognised as the pre-eminent library of text on the built environment in Australia.

We encourage you to contact us to find out more about our programs, our staff and our research expertise.
